Natural Ways to Help Dogs with Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a common health concern among dogs. Research on 10, 482 dogs revealed that 1861 of them suffered from seizures. Phenobarbital is the most common medication prescribed to dogs with epilepsy.

Phenobarbital for epilepsy

Phenobarbital is prescribed for epilepsy since it calms the neuronal activity in the brain. This can help with the occurrence of seizures and can effectively reduce the number of episodes.

This drug is also used to treat humans, especially epilepsy in children as well as insomnia and anxiety.

Phenobarbital’s side-effects

Phenobarbital is a popular medication prescribed by vets because dogs can tolerate it quite well. Like all medication, there are side-effects with this drug, too.

These can range from mild to severe, depending on your dog. Its mild side-effects include excessive hunger and thirst, weight gain, fatigue, weakness, loss of coordination of the hind legs, among others.

Phenobarbital affects the liver

The more serious side-effects of this medication cause liver problems. Increased liver enzyme production is caused by this medication. This can cause liver damage in some dogs.

Acute liver problems can have serious consequences. Vets, therefore, won’t prescribe this medication for dogs that already experience liver problems.

Phenobarbital can cause anemia

In rare cases, Phenobarbital can cause anemia in dogs too. Anemia is a condition where the body experiences a lack of red blood cells. Anemia can leave your dog feeling excessively tired and fatigued.

Keep an eye on your dog’s behavior if they’re on Phenobarbital; any changes in their mood is reason enough to take them to the vet.

A natural supplement that helps seizures: CBD oil

Due to the side-effects of Phenobarbital, many pet owners are looking into natural supplements that can help their dogs. CBD oil is a great supplement to help with seizures.

In a study, CBD oil was used on dogs with drug-resistant epilepsy, also known as idiopathic epilepsy. Idiopathic epilepsy is known to affect 5.7% of dogs. This study had ground-breaking results.

Within 4 months, the dogs that were part of the experiment had shown great improvement. 89% of the dogs experimented on had responded to the treatment well.

CBD oil is a non-psychoactive drug. It’s derived from the hemp plant and not marijuana, so you don’t have to worry about your dog getting high on it.

It’s a natural anti-inflammatory and when consumed by pets, can help the inflammation in the brain and nervous system that causes seizures.

Like a human body, dogs also have an endocannabinoid system, known as ECS. The CBD oil works on the ECS to promote the health and well-being of your dog.

In addition to having anti-inflammatory properties, CBD oil can also help stabilize neurons and reduce seizures.
